Youth of Color Think Stupak is the Pitts Too!

Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 11:19am

by Latoya Peterson On Wednesday, I went to check out the National Day of Action to Stop Stupak up on Capitol Hill. Running late and plagued by a persistent and annoying rain, I stumbled upon two other pro-choicers (easily identified by their hot pink signage) and ended up tagging along with them. I found myself in the perfect place – the basement of the Church of the Reformation was al[...]

Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 08:00am

Twenty-six students were attacked yesterday at South Philadelphia High School: The school’s principal, LaGreta Brown, declined to comment, but Michael Silverman, who oversees the city’s 32 neighborhood schools, said that assaults in the school are down by 50 percent. Well, that’s heartening. Why isn’t this bigger news?

First off, we’re happy to welcome a new addition to Team Snarklight Express: the boss of bosses at New Demographic herself, Carmen Van Kerckhove! Carmen: Hey there! I tend to think this fascination with Tiger Woods has to do with the fact that he has a blonde, white wife.  But anyway, the racist jokes are flying.  And people can’t even be original about it.  Basically the same joke came out of the mouths of George Lopez, Wanda Sykes and Jo Koy.  It goes like this: You know, Tiger Wo0ds is half black and half Asian.  So his b[...]

Boo!

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 at 12:00pm

I think I need a category. I was all excited when I saw the Bruce Lee weather forecast over at Angry Asian Man.  That is, until I saw the clothing selected for him: The characters on the first shirt are too small to read (maybe 普京知something? is that Putin on the shirt?) but the second t-shirt reads something like “Taking application for a Japanese girl.”  And t[...]

Why are Black Americans Playing Roles Meant for Africans?

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 at 08:55am

by Special Correspondent Nadra Kareem “Invictus,” a film about Nelson Mandela’s efforts to unify post-apartheid South Africa through rugby, opens Dec. 11. The film stars Matt Damon as captain of South Africa’s 1995 rugby team and Morgan Freeman as Mandela. New Research Suggests Obama Supporters See Whiteness

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 at 07:49am

New research suggests that people’s political views influence how they see biracial candidates (h/t Louise Seamster).   When it comes to President Obama (who is biracial), supporters tend to view him as ‘whiter’ than those who are not supporters.  The research, published in a recent issue of the Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences, was conduc[...]

Worst lede of the year

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009 at 01:00pm

I’m ready to call it and it’s just the beginning of December: Today, Meredith Baxter revealed the gender to which her heart is truly tied: women. Today, Sheila Marikar revealed the profession to which her brain is truly disconnected: writing. But maybe writing is just a lifestyle preference for her.

Ignoring anti-immigrant xenophobia: The Common Council edition

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009 at 11:13am

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009 at 11:00am
